Gil has always loved the Bowie knife. He was inspired to make knives because he wanted a Bowie after seeing the 1952 film "The Iron Mistress". He made his first Bowie in 1954, three years before he became a full time knifemaker.

In 1957 Gil Hibben began his career as a custom knifemaker. This limited edition 50th Anniversary knife is similar to his Southern Bowies that Gil made in the early years. This very special Anniversary Edition knife is strictly limited to 50 stainless steel knives to commemorate Gil's 50 years as a knifemaker. In addition, he will make only 5 Damascus steel versions commemorating his 5 decades of custom knifemaking. These beautiful knives features a 9 1/2 inch blade of 5/16 inch thick steel. The overall length is 15 inches. The heavy brass guard and pommel compliment the stunning Makassar Ebony handle. The blade is etched with a special anniversary logo featuring Gil's signature and likeness. Each knife comes complete with a custom fitted handmade leather sheath, a special anniversary nylon zippered pouch, and a personally signed certificate of authenticity.

Stuart Benedict & Gil Hibben were partners for a few months in the early 1960s. It was during this time that Gil was Pioneering 440c stainless which was only available in round stock so all of these pieces were forged until Gil was able to get a manufacturer to start making Flat stock. Gil used Rosewood for most of these pieces.

Gil made 2 sets of 100 pieces each for the Harley Owners Groups 5th anniversary. The steel was made by Rob Charlton/Damascus USA. One set having ivory micarta handles and the other having cocobolo handles.
